Özgür Irmak Corset Treatment and Scoliosis

Scoliosis  is the lateral curvature of the spine ,that can affect any part of the spine but mostly at the level of the chest   and lower back &nbsp. How is the diagnosis made? In most cases, the patient’s appearance and physical examination make a definitive diagnosis. However, laboratory tests, plain x-ray, tomography, MR may be required to determine the form of the disease and to distinguish it from other diseases.

  • The forward bending test, also called Adam’s test, is applied in cases of suspected or school screening.
  • The patient must be completely naked and standing.
  • The patient is asked to lean forward with the feet adjacent and the knee extended.
  • The arms should swing free and palms facing each other.

Scoliosis treatment is categorized under two headings:

  1. Conservative methods (Exercise, Traction, Using Corset)
  2. Surgical methods

The most important point in corset treatment is to have a unique approach for each patient. Corset treatment should be applied between 20-25 and 50 degrees.Corset practices give better results in patients with high growth reserves (girls have not seen menstruation or less than a year since the first menstruation are the best times for corsetting).

Corset usage time in these children is 20-22 hours. In children whose growth scale is 3 on radiographs, in other words, it is appropriate to use 16-18 hours of use in children who have passed the first period. This use should be continued until bone development is complete, ie, on average 17 years of age. Corset applications in scoliosis should be handled in 3 dimensions and a model should be determined based on the age of the patient, the degree of scoliosis, and the scoliosis region.

As ÖZGÜR IRMAK PROSTHESIS ORTHOSIS CENTER we first evaluate scoliosis in 3 dimensions according to the structure of scoliosis, and after taking the necessary radiographs from our doctors, we remove the plaster model and then cast the plaster model. While processing this model, we provide correct corrective support from the peak of scoliosis..

In corsets, which we usually make from thermoplastic materials, we use the most compatible and easy to use interior coating materials that do not sweat. Besides, the corset should not restrict breathing and should not exert pressure on the breast area, especially in girls.

Generally, a radiograph is taken 3 weeks after the corset is applied and if the curvature does not decrease below 10 degrees, we revise the corset. Besides, as ÖZGÜR IRMAK PROSTHESIS ORTHESIS CENTER, there is another factor that increases the effectiveness of corset applications.

This is a 3D laser static-dynamic analysis that we do in our center. In line with the analysis results we obtained, we make insoles that will support us in the opposite direction of curvature.
